How to use flash cards well

  1. Keep the pile small. Start with 8 to 10 cards from one group, like doubles, not all the facts.
  2. Sort as you go. Cards they know straight away go in one pile, and cards they have to think about go in another.
  3. Spend the time on the second pile, and mix in a few known cards so that it stays fun.
  4. Stop after five minutes. A little each day works better than a long session.

Questions

How do the fold-over cards work?

Print on card if you can. Cut along the solid lines, fold on the dashed line, and glue the halves together. The fact is on one side and the answer on the other.

Are flash cards a good way to learn facts?

They're good for practice once a child has a way of working a fact out. They don't teach the fact by themselves. Pair them with a strategy.

Is Sumtown really free?

Yes. The whole game plays free in your browser, with no signup, no ads and no time limit. All fourteen mini games are in it. An iPhone app is on its way, and you can read what it will add.

An app is on its way

We're building a Sumtown app for iPhone with the parts that need a real app: offline play for car rides, a town map that remembers how far your child got, and a parent report on every fact. Until then, the whole game is free right here.
